Strengthening the Fishing Community

The discussions focused on encouraging fisherfolk to become more actively involved in the organisation and ensuring that the Co-operative can better represent their interests.

Registrar in the Ministry of Co-operatives, Gender Affairs, Persons with Disabilities, Local Government and Labour, Kwesi Cato, stressed the importance of members’ active involvement and commitment to the organisation’s long-term success.

The proposed revitalisation also places emphasis on greater collaboration among fishing communities in Union Island, Canouan and Mayreau.

Why Co-operatives Matter

Fishing co-operatives can provide an important organisational structure for small-scale fishermen, allowing members to coordinate activities, identify common challenges and advocate for their interests.

Effective co-operation may also support opportunities for shared resources, business development and stronger market connections.
