Turning discarded plastic into marketable products is at the centre of a new initiative led by Action Bequia, which has been selected for support through the Caribbean Blue Economy Financing programme.
The organisation’s SVG Circular Blue Economy Initiative will establish a Waste-to-Product Incubator to assist entrepreneurs and small businesses involved in plastic upcycling and repurposing.
According to a September 22 announcement, Action Bequia was among five organisations selected following a regional call that attracted 74 proposals. The programme is administered through the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund.
The planned incubator aims to strengthen local entrepreneurs’ capacity while reducing plastic waste entering the marine environment.
Action Bequia’s Executive Board Chair, Lucille Cozier, welcomed the support, highlighting the potential to create valuable products and new economic opportunities.
The initiative brings business development and environmental protection together, with a focus on building sustainable livelihoods through waste reduction.
